Delta 8 THC vs. Delta 9 THC: What’s the Difference?

Like marijuana, delta 8 THC’s legal status varies from state to state. However, there’s an important distinction: delta 8 THC is legal on a federal level. You can order it from out-of-state companies and have it delivered, cheap-indica-strains-for-sale online.
But contrary to what you might think. Delta 8 THC’s federal legality has nothing to do with it being safer and less psychoactive.

However, the DEA introduced an update to the 2018 Farm Bill on August 20, 2020, called the Interim Final Rule. The amendment deems all synthetically derived tetrahydrocannabinol as Schedule I controlled substances, just like marijuana. Even though delta 8 is a naturally occurring compound, some governments consider it synthetic because of the extraction processes.
Delta 8 THC’s paradoxical legal status is another product of the murky marijuana regulations. Nevertheless, the Interim Final Rule hasn’t halted delta 8 THC’s momentum. With vendors going full speed ahead, confident they’re compliant with the law.
Even a federally legal status isn’t all-powerful, as individual states can override federal law. A few states have enforced this right to illegalize delta 8 THC.
Delta 8 THC is an isomer of delta 9 THC. Which means it consists of the same chemical make-up but has a different structure. More specifically, delta 8 THC and delta 9 THC have a chemical double bond in common, situated on their eighth and ninth carbon chain, respectively. This is what that numeric difference in the two isomers’ titles comes from.
That difference may seem like a mere scientific technicality that matters only on paper, but has tangible implications in reality. For starters, delta 8 THC is half to two-thirds as potent as delta 9 THC, significantly reducing the danger of accidental overconsumption that potent marijuana strains carry.
